Hard-wired smoke alarms require a hot, neutral and a ground wire. The contractor will first insure if there are alarms already installed making sure each alarm is wired into the series. This insures each alarm has the same dedicated circuit breaker.

Marietta electrical contractors will use a junction box in the wall or ceiling for the wiring. The junction box will have screw down cable clamps to secure the wire. The base plate of the alarm will center over the junction box with the wires coming through the base of the alarm.

Secure the base plate to the ceiling or wall. The source wire will have a black wire for hot and a white for neutral and a bare copper one for the ground. Connect the ground wire to the ground screw located on the alarm and wire the hot and neutral. The alarm in most cases will have a red wire for hot and yellow or white for neutral.

The source wires will connect to a wire harness that plugs into the alarm unit. If wiring is already there from an existing alarm, use the same wiring method. The contractor will attach wiring to continue the series before mounting the alarm.
